Victor A. Schmidt

Statement:
I never see the same thing twice the same way. With the second look, I begin to wonder how it would do with a few alterations, and by the third look, I am ready to completely transform it into something different.

The world of objects can be as mysterious as the world of ideas. Sculptors have spent thousands of years attempting to apply their ideas to inanimate objects. I do that, too. I try to create a harmony, a bonding where the idea and the object become consenting and inspired partners.

Sometimes I find sculpting a lot like singing and dancing, except sculpting is slower and heavier. It is thrilling, though, to have an infinite choice of possible variants every step of the way. I am inclined to think that sculptors should have, first and foremost, a good sense of direction. The material itself ensures that the approach to the building of the piece be methodical and does, by its resistant nature, tend to encourage simplicity.

The more I work and the more sculptures are made, the closer I wish to get to an aesthetic without frills, closer to images that need no words and sculptures that need no explanation.
